CONRAIL BOOK MBI

During its 25-year history, Conrail became one of the most familiar modern railroads, a freight line that connected most of the Northeasts population centers and was renowned for its clean locomotives, tight schedules, and frequent heavy freight trains. This comprehensive and gorgeously illustrated history examines Conrails motive power and rolling stock, its yards and terminals, and its most interesting routes, as well as its operations. Much of the information is gleaned from interviews with former Conrail employees. The photography is sourced from a variety of collections and archivists around the country. Following a brief look at the Pennsylvania, New Haven, New York Central, Lehigh Valley, Erie-Lackawanna, and other roads that ultimately formed Conrail, the book launches into chapters detailing the major aspects of Conrail operations, including:

1. The Boston Line, the worlds oldest mountain railroad which was home to scenic splendor and 5,000-horsepower Electro-Motive SD80MAC locomotives;
2. The Water Level Route, the former New York-to-Chicago path of the New York Centrals 20th Century Limited that was one of Conrails busiest routes, handling dozens of Conrail intermodals daily amongst the beauty of the Hudson River Valley and the Great Lakes;
3. The Southern Tier, a scenic, broad-gauge engineering marvel in eastern Pennsylvania and New York State which, though long-dormant, came alive as Conrails premier stack-train route; and
4. Perhaps the photographic highlight of the book, Conrail in Pennsylvania, a state lauded for its Allegheny Mountain railways and Horseshoe curve and myriad coal lines and secondary branches amid bucolic beauty.

Further chapters include coverage of Conrails Midwestern operations in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, its smaller branch lines, Conrail terminals, and epilog detailing Conrails 1999 split between CSX and Norfolk Southern and a brief look at "Conrail" under its new owners. Hardcover, 144 pages including 100 color and 50 black and white photographs. $35

CONRAIL VIDEOS by RSVProductions

"CONRAIL Action" shows footage along the Ft. Wayne and Pittsburgh Lines of Conrail from the mid-late 1980's until the break-up of the railroad by NS and CSX. This huge multi-part series will show you action from Alliance, OH through Pittsburgh, PA; into the Laurel Highlands of the Appalachia Mountains and then down into Altoona. Think of the "CONRAIL Action" Series as a railfan trip from west to east over the course of a week or more. Some locations you'll see just 1 or 2 trains, while others have a parade of traffic. RSVP does all the driving, finds the locations, and captures the sights and sounds for your viewing pleasure of the great railroad that Conrail became. These 2-disc DVD sets are just $25!! Please include a flat $3 shipping regardless of how many dvd sets ordered.

Power ranges from GP10's, GP40's and SD40-2's and GE B23-7's, B36-7's to the big SD50's, 60's, 80MAC's and C40-8W's. Plus some "foreign" units spice up the action at times. Locations are: Alliance, Salem, Leetonia, Columbiana, New Waterford, and East Palestine in Ohio; then onto Enon Valley, New Galilee, Homewood Area, Beaver Falls, New Brighton, Rochester and East Conway, all in Pennsylvania. 4 hours total on 2 DVD's. Notice the difference in motive power between the older video clips and the newer clips. GP40-2's, SD40-2's & B36-7's handle most earlier trains and newer GE & EMD wide cabs take over on most of the recent trains. Locations are; E. Conway, Ambridge, Leetsdale, Sewickley, Osborne, Glenfield, Emsworth, Pittsburgh-Island Ave., Pittsburgh-West Park, Pittsburgh CP "EAST PITT", Pittsburgh Bloomfield, Pittsburgh Shadyside, Edgewood, Swissvale, Braddock, East Pittsburgh, Wilmerding, and the Pittsburgh Intermodal Terminal located between the towns of Wall & Pitcairn. 4 hours total on 2 DVD's. Part 3. Trafford to Jeannette, PA
Part 3 of this multi-series takes you from Trafford to Jeannette, PA on 2 DVD's. You'll see intermodal, long merchandise, loaded and empty coal, and a few passenger trains as they start their climb or finish their descent short span on our mythical railfan journey there are lots and lots of trains to be seen at some of our favorite locations. Locations such as Cavittsville, Larimer, and Railroad Street in Wegley are hard to leave when CONRAIL keeps the trains coming one after another. Other locations are; Ardara, North Irwin, Westmoreland City, Manor, Penn and Jeannette. 4 hours total on 2 DVD's. Sound, no narration, chaptered.

Part 4. Jeannette / Grapeville to Latrobe, PA
Part 4 of this multi-series takes you from the Jeannette / Grapeville area to Latrobe, PA on 2 DVD's. Disc #1 is from Jeannette / Grapeville to Greensburg, PA and disc #2 is from Greensburg to Latrobe, PA. Although not a very long distance to cover in this part of our CONRAIL Series, RSVP has gathered more footage in this area than any other on CONRAIL. As we progress into the Laurel Highland's foothills, trains take on a "roller coaster" effect; climbing up grades and then swiftly descending, only to do it all over again. A good many helpers too. Locations include; Jeannette / Grapeville Border, Radebaugh, Greensburg, Bocard, Donohoe, Lloydsville and Latrobe. 4 hours total on 2 DVD's. Sound, no narration, chaptered.

Part 5. Latrobe, PA to CONPIT
Part 5 of this multi-series takes you from Latrobe, PA to CONPIT (A major interlocking on CONRAIL) on 2 DVD's. Disc #1 is from Latrobe to Millwood. Disc #2 shows Hillside to CONPIT. As we head deeper and deeper into the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania the rolling hills are becoming steeper and the trains are finding streams and river valleys to help ease their climb into the mountains. Locations include; Latrobe, Loyalhanna, West Derry, Derry, Millwood, Hillside, Torrance, Bolivar, Lockport, Climax and CONPIT. Of particular interest is the town of Derry and surrounding area. A once thriving and important railroad town of the Pennsylvania R.R. This was, and still is, a great place to view trains. Many different locations for still photos and video. 2 older cabooses are next to the right-of-way. 4 hours total on 2 DVD's. Sound, no narration, chaptered.

Part 6. New Florence to Rt. 53 Bridge (Cresson) Including Johnstown

All types of trains are shown; Intermodal/trailer, Amtrak, coal, ore, merchandise and locals. Now that we're in the mountainous region of our trip, you'll see plenty of helpers (SD40-2's & SD45-2's) on trains heading east and west. This section of track, through the Allegheny mountains presented a huge challenge to CONRAIL; Penn Central and The Pennsylvania Railroad before it. Sit back and enjoy the variety of CONRAIL power as they lug trains up and down the mountain. 4 hours total on 2 DVD's. Sound, no narration, chaptered.

Part 7. Rt. 53 Bridge (Cresson) to Altoona/Pinecroft
Part 7, the final part in the CONRAIL series, we continue from the Rt. 53 Bridge near Cresson. Climb the last few miles to Gallitzin. Check out the tunnels and interlockings in the area. Then we head down the mountain to Altoona. Along the way we stop at the curves of "Allegrippus", "MG" Tower and Horseshoe Curve. In the Altoona area, we linger at the "Brickyard Road Crossing" and catch a lot of trains finishing their descent and others starting the brutal climb to Gallitzin. One of our best shots of the whole series takes place here at the "Brickyard"; a moving 3 way meet. We briefly visit "Slope" & "Alto", then on to the Amtrak station/Railroaders Museum area. We catch action on the main at "Works" & "Rose" along with views of the yard. We finish our long railfan journey from Ohio at Pinecroft, (East of Altoona) and end with K-4 #1361 at Tipton. 3 hours total on 2 DVD's. Sound, no narration, chaptered.

The Men Who Loved Trains

The Story of Men Who Battled Greed to Save an Ailing Industry

A behind-the-scenes look at the boardroom battles to save American railroads. A saga about one of the oldest and most romantic enterprises in the land—America's railroads—The Men Who Loved Trains introduces some of the most dynamic businessmen in America. Here are the chieftains who have run the railroads, including those who set about grabbing power and big salaries for themselves, and others who truly loved the industry.

As a journalist and associate editor of Fortune magazine who covered the demise of Penn Central and the creation of Conrail, Rush Loving often had a front row seat to the foibles and follies of this group of men. He uncovers intrigue, greed, lust for power, boardroom battles, and takeover wars and turns them into a page-turning story for readers.

Included is the story of how the chairman of CSX Corporation, who later became George W. Bush's Treasury secretary, was inept as a manager but managed to make millions for himself while his company drifted in chaos. Men such as he were shy of scruples, yet there were also those who loved trains and railroading, and who played key roles in reshaping transportation in the northeastern United States. This book will delight not only the rail fan, but anyone interested in American business and history.

A new shipment of these fantastic books are once again available to CRHS members for $28.
